FUNCTION

SMARCC2 (BAF170) is a core subunit of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex, which regulates gene expression by altering chromatin structure in an ATP-dependent manner. This complex is essential for transcription, DNA replication, and repair, and plays a key role in cell growth, differentiation, and development. SMARCC2/BAF170 enhances the ATPase activity of the catalytic subunit BRG1, facilitating nucleosome remodeling and gene regulation. During neural development, SMARCC2/BAF170 is part of both the neural progenitor-specific (npBAF) and neuron-specific (nBAF) chromatin remodeling complexes. The npBAF complex supports neural stem cell self-renewal, while the nBAF complex regulates dendrite growth and neuronal gene expression. SMARCC2/BAF170 also plays a critical role in myeloid differentiation, particularly in granulocytopoiesis and neutrophil granule formation. Its expression is tightly regulated, and its upregulation is associated with the loss of pluripotency in embryonic stem cells.
